Commander has been leading the charge for Magic: The Gathering paper products in a very digitized world and has become the defacto way to enjoy the game with a focus on “The Gathering” aspect. Due to the popularity of the format, Wizards of the Coast had the brilliant idea to create their own “EDH” format they called “Brawl” which is basically Commander but with standard legal cards.
However, people still preferred playing commander, causing the new format to never find a home outside of MTG Arena. In fact a man has won two Brawl tournaments by being the only one to show up. Hey leave the satire to us!
In the wake of this news, Brawl events everywhere (at least three of them worldwide) have been canceled due to lack of entrants, leaving paper Brawl decks unemployed. Our own Brawl deck was found up late watching Rudy again last night.
“It’s not fair,” Knight’s Charge said, breath tinged with notes of whiskey. “I was supposed to be the first, not the last. I gave the world Arcane Signet, but they just ditched us and went to go play with Commander instead. I thought we had something special. Something unique.”
Knight’s Charge went on to speculate on why things never went the way they were supposed to.
“I guess people didn’t like the idea of building decks with fewer commanders and fewer cards. Not sure why that would be the case. No decision paralysis to worry about. No crazy combos or cEDH pubstompers. We have a clearly defined meta. If I just had the chance to-“
We took this opportunity to break the news to Knight’s Charge. Despite being a the first Brawl deck ever made, it was made during Throne of Eldraine which has since rotated.
“What do you mean I’m illegal? I am a Brawl deck. It’s literally what I’m designed for. It’s the only thing I can do. What do you mean “rotate”? Oh god. You mean that, unlike commander where you can play the deck you invested your time and money into forever you have to build new decks every year and the old ones become useless? And now even if coach decided to put me in the game I couldn’t even play because I’m illegal?! No wonder no one plays this stupid format.”
