With Magic30 right around the corner, more details about the celebration continue to trickle in. Recently, prizing for a cosplay event at the thirty-year anniversary was announced which included a $200 gift card to JOANN Fabric for the winner of the event. Reasonable people took to the internet to meme on what should have clearly been a Pauper Jumpstart headline which prompted Wizards of the Coast to bolster the prize support of the event by providing the winner a free continental breakfast.
“We don’t get it right all the time,” said WotC spokesperson Thea Quinn. “We want our fans to know we hear them. That’s why we’re going to be restructuring the prize support for this and all other events. While we’re going to announce the entire revised plan soon, we want fans to see us taking immediate steps to rectify our mistake. That’s why, in addition to the $200 JOANN fabric gift card—courtesy of JOANN fabric—we’re also throwing in a free continental breakfast courtesy of Motel 6.”
Fans appreciate the feedback and acknowledgement that their voices are being heard, though some question if the added prizing is enough.
“I don’t think they understand how much time, money, and effort goes into making a great cosplay,” said cosplay enthusiast Stan Neale. “We’re not asking them to fit the bill for the money we spend on promoting their product either, but when’s the last time the winner of Formula 1 race was awarded Chevron gift cards? It feels like they want the best cosplayers to compete, then award them money they can only use to make more cosplays to then attend future WotC events. I wonder which marketing genius was patting themselves on the back thinking they’d discovered a free promotions glitch. I’m glad they listened and added to the prizing support though. I hope they have a waffle station.”
WotC expanded on the additional prizing, letting players know that this isn’t just any breakfast.
“We let Motel 6 know they needed to pull out all the stops. That means three kinds of cereal and non-dairy milk options. The bacon is going to replaced twice and they’re going to mix in real eggs along with the powder. Plus, those pastries aren’t going to be left over from yesterday, they’re going to be purchased fresh from the Chevron station across the street that morning. Don’t worry, those cans of concentrated orange juice are nearly defrosted.”
At time of press WotC reminded the winners that breakfast will look nothing like the picture above and is only available between 6:00 a.m. – 7:30 a.m. though will probably run out of pancakes by 6:25.
